APPROACH
Psychotherapy offers you the opportunity to address persistent difficulties that cause distress, and to make changes. You also come to know yourself better and to feel emotionally freer, with more capacity for engagement and fulfillment in all areas of your life. Here are a few words about my clinical approach to individual and couples work.
The individual therapy relationship provides a foundation for psychological growth, while the enlivening nature of the therapy process adds momentum for change. Our sessions take place in an empathic, collaborative environment, where you can feel comfortable discussing difficulties and exploring yourself more fully. As we develop a deeper understanding of your past and present experiences, you begin to work through internal obstacles that hold you back. Old patterns are loosened, opening the possibility for more fulfilling ways of being and relating.
I approach couples therapy with the understanding that problems in relationships are always shaped and maintained by both partners. I also highlight the strengths and uniqueness of each couple, and build on these in the work. As a couple, you develop greater awareness of how you relate to one another. In each session we work with entrenched patterns of communication, recognizing how and why they arise. Most significantly, we explore feelings and needs that are buried or out of awareness, and expand opportunities for empathy, recognition and response. As therapy progresses it becomes possible to move beyond stubborn impasses, and to discover more rewarding ways of connecting.
